Nernier

A charming village on the shores of Geneva Lake

Located in Haute‑Savoie, on the Lake Geneva peninsula facing Nyon (Switzerland), Nernier is a charming village of 1.82 km² with around 400 inhabitants, nicknamed the Néroniens and Néroniennes. Nestled at approximately 372 m altitude, it stretches along a 2.5 km coastline, offering a breathtaking view of the Alps and Mont Blanc.

Much less frequented than its neighbor Yvoire but just as charming, this village is worth a visit. Here, it’s all about strolling through the village lanes and along Lake Geneva; shopping enthusiasts will be disappointed, as there are few shops, a handful of restaurants, and a small but pleasant marina.

A rich historical past

  • The site hosts traces of Neolithic lakeside villages, which became an important port in Roman times, then an agricultural center (vineyard and wheat) in the Middle Ages.
  • Under the Bernese in the 16th century, the village endured assaults and occupations, before prospering in the 18th century, notably with the construction of its bell tower in the Italian style.
  • Long a fishing village and tannery hub, Nernier was also an active smuggling point with neighboring Switzerland.

Art and romance: the “Village of Painters”

In the 1950s, Nernier became a Village of Painters thanks to the artist Enrico Vegetti and the enthusiasm of passionate amateurs. The poet Lamartine stayed here, Mary Shelley wrote part of Frankenstein here, and poetic trails dotted with murals and literary excerpts recall this still vibrant artistic tradition.

Architectural and natural heritage

  • Saint-Martin Church: rebuilt in 1840, with the discovery of ancient graves during the works, featuring a bell tower with 5 gables in an original style.
  • Notre-Dame-du-Lac Chapel: an old medieval building dedicated to Saint Nicholas and rich in the legend of the “sunken bell” which once warned sailors during storms.
  • Lake Castle: an elegant medieval building rarely open to the public but admired from the port or the quays.

Romantic walks & peaceful atmosphere

The ideal village for aimless strolling: five cobbled streets decorated with hollyhocks, wisterias, molasse houses with colorful façades sometimes opening directly onto the lake. The port, very quiet off-season, now welcomes pleasure sailors, classic sailboats such as the Calypso (1911), classified as a historic monument, and small pleasure boats (around 250 boats).

A small romantic trail connects the village entrance to the port, marked with murals and poems, paying tribute to the artists and writers who lived here.

Activities and leisure

  • Enjoy the pebble beach, accessible all year round, with supervised swimming in summer and a calm, natural environment.
  • Water activities: swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing for trout, pike, Arctic char or carp — Lake Geneva offers a traditional richness in fish species.
  • Art gallery, temporary exhibitions and cultural events regularly enliven Nernier, continuing its artistic heritage.
